How to effectively develop operational quality?

How can you achieve the best results in operational quality development? What are your objectives for improving operational quality? Where does the impulse for quality development originate? Is it that final tedious chore that has been lingering on the outskirts of the mandatory agenda and postponed until the very last minute?

What kind of experiences do you have?

For many, operational quality development means compliance and certification, driven by needs such as customer requirements. This is typical, particularly in B2B business.

For others, quality development means process mapping. Processes are mapped to better understand them, communicate them, and identify development needs. Process mapping is often carried out not only for quality development purposes but also in IT projects, where the aim is to understand the current process, the future state after change, and the role of information systems within them. Indeed, process mapping is included in the majority of quality development and IT project agendas.

PS-Tieto Oy approaches operational quality development slightly differently. The goal is inspiring change through renewal and continuous improvement. In this case, excellent operations – operational quality – becomes a competitive advantage for the organisation.

The competitive advantage thus stems from the continuous striving to be better today than yesterday – and better tomorrow than today. Superiority means that the customer receives more value today than yesterday, and even more tomorrow. Increasing customer value leads to growth. – The fact that we operate more productively today than yesterday, and even more so tomorrow, leads to improved efficiency.

Operational quality development transforms from a desk job for a few responsible individuals into an inspiring organisation-wide journey, where everyone competes for customer loyalty, meeting customer needs, and exceeding customer expectations in the smartest way possible, while ensuring smooth operations.

What about compliance, process mapping, and the rest? These are definitely included in the implementation method, in accordance with requirements and on a sensible scale. It is a question of which purpose takes priority and what significance is attributed to operational quality.

In our view, the core of operational quality development can be summarised as:

  • Company-specific starting points and ambitions
  • Purpose and principles
  • The right direction for development, methods, and organisation
  • Operations (in daily life, in the field, on the shop floor)
